Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
(NIV)
We have all been in need of mercy. We are all still in need of mercy. There is just no getting around that fact. All of us are sinners. I know that there are some who might deny this outwardly, but in the depths of their hearts, they know they have done the wrong thing.
But don't forget who we need the mercy from. Consider the words of David, after he had committed adultery and murder:
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you are proved right when you speak
and justified when you judge.
Psalm 51:1-4 (NIV) [read the whole chapter]
We need mercy! And we need to obtain it from the mercy giver!
But we can also be the bestowers of mercy. We can partake in the mercies of God by bestowing mercy on others. And if we do this, and become merciful people, then we will be happy (blessed) and the God of Heaven will show us mercy.
