Psalm 127:2

It is in vain that you rise up early
and go late to rest,
eating the bread of anxious toil;
for he gives to his beloved sleep.
(ESV)


Remember, in the first verse it starts off, "Unless the Lord build the house..." That idea has carried over into this verse. We are still talking about house building.

Anxious toil is that worrisome sort of work. It is that work that is based in your own worries. Doing extra things to try to calm that rumbling fear. Getting up early and going to bed late, hoping that you will cover all of your bases, that all of your ducks will be in a row...

To his beloved, God gives rest. There is peace in the houses that He builds.

Psalm 119:10

With my whole heart I have searched for You; Let me not wander from Your commandments. -Psalm 119:10 (Translation by Jay E. Adams, in his book Counsel from Psalm 119) Can you say with this psalmist, that you have searched for God with your whole heart? Is your prayer, the prayer that he prayed? "O Lord, don't let me wander from Your Word!" In this blog, I hope to post daily (or nearly daily) posting from scripture. I don't plan on adding much of my own commentary, maybe just a statement or two; sometimes more, sometimes less. 1 Thessalonians 2:18

because we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, again and again—but Satan hindered us.  (1 Thessalonians 2:18 -- ESV) This is a continuation of the previous verse. Paul recognizes that there is a power that is working against his return to the Thessalonians. That power is the person of Satan. I imagine that Satan is desperately fighting to stop the spread of the gospel message.  What Satan had purposed for evil, God has purposed for good. Satan's hindering of Paul's return to the Thessalonians has resulted in the first letter to the Thessalonians, which has lasted through the years and has benefited the Church, not just in Thessalonica, but across the globe.
